Dog sharing for New York

Share a dog. Split the love, the walks and the costs.

Life happens. New jobs, breakups, a new apartment. That shouldn't mean you lose your dog. Find your other half nearby: you take Monday to Friday, they take the weekends, and the dog gets two homes that love it.

Free for now. Sign up in under a minute, no email confirmation.

Why we built this

Most people who give up a dog don't want to. Life just stops fitting around a full-time pet for a while.

6%

US pet-owning households rehomed a dog or cat within five years, about 6.12 million households.1

27%

of rehoming was mainly about family situations, like family health troubles or allergies, and 18% was about housing.1

#1

For renters, housing was the top reason for rehoming. Among housing reasons, 43% cited a landlord.2

72%

of renters report difficulty finding pet-friendly housing.3

30%

of dogs and cats entering US shelters and rescues in 2025 were given up by their owners.4

1,906

dogs were surrendered by their owners to NYC's city shelters in 2024.5

A shared home can't fix everything, but for a lot of these moments, half the time with your dog beats none. And for the many New Yorkers who'd love a dog but can't do 100%, it's a way in.

How it works

Three steps from "I wish I had a dog" to a shared plan.

  1. 1

    Make a profile

Tell us if you have a dog or want to share one, your neighborhood, and the half days you can cover each week.

  2. 2

Get matched with your other half

We rank people whose week fills the gaps in yours. You take Mon to Fri, they take weekends, full week covered.

  3. 3

    Agree a plan

Meet up, then set a shared calendar, an agreement on costs and vet bills, and a handoff checklist together.

Who it's for

🐕 Dog owners who travel or work long hours

Keep your dog happy and walked when you're on the road or stuck at the office, with one trusted person instead of a rotating cast of sitters.

❤️ People who want a dog but can't do 100%

Small apartment, busy weekdays, a lease that says maybe? Share a dog part time and get the best bits: weekend walks, park days, couch cuddles.

Built for sharing, not just matching

🧩

Complementary schedules

Matching scores how well your weeks fit together first, then distance, energy level, budget and role. Every match says why in plain words.

Agree the cost split, who makes vet decisions, what happens in an emergency and a trial period, before it matters.

🛡️

Safety first

Report or block anyone in one tap, reports are reviewed by a person, and chat is filtered for abuse. ID verification is on the way.

Questions

Is it free?

Yes, Dog Share NYC is free for now. If that ever changes we'll tell members well ahead of time.

How are costs split?

You decide together. Your profile has a monthly budget, and the agreement builder lets you split food, walkers, grooming and gear evenly, by time with the dog, or however you like.

Who pays the vet bills?

The agreement covers who makes vet decisions and what happens in an emergency, and the cost split can include vet care and insurance. The owner stays the legal owner and usually makes the final medical call.

What if it doesn't work out?

Every agreement starts with a trial period, so you can both check it feels right. You can unmatch at any time, and the dog goes back to its owner's full-time care.

What if my situation changes?

That's exactly what Dog Share is for. If you start a job with long hours, move somewhere smaller or go through a breakup, you can update the days you can cover and find someone whose week fills the gap, so your dog stays in your life instead of being rehomed.

Is it safe?

Meet in a public place first, ideally a dog run, and do a trial walk before any overnight. Map pins are approximate, you can report or block anyone, and we review every report.

Do I need to own a dog?

No. Owners list their dog, and co-parents who want part-time dog time look for one. Two co-parents can also team up.
